Corcovado Overnight: Three-Day Los Patos Expedition

This three-day expedition takes you across an extraordinary section of Corcovado National Park, beginning at Los Patos Ranger Station, continuing through the wildlife-rich trails of Sirena and finishing along the spectacular coastal route to La Leona.
Designed for experienced hikers in good physical condition, this adventure combines long-distance hiking, remote rainforest, rivers, pristine beaches and excellent opportunities for wildlife observation. With two nights at Sirena Ranger Station and three very different days of exploration, it offers one of the most complete and immersive ways to experience Corcovado.
Day1: Los Patos to Sirena – 24 km Hike
Our expedition begins early in Puerto Jiménez, with departure usually around 5:30 am. From there, transportation will take us to Los Patos Ranger Station, where we’ll complete the registration process and prepare for the first and most remote section of our journey.
The approximately 24 km trail to Sirena takes us through the interior of Corcovado National Park, surrounded by impressive primary rainforest. Along the way, we’ll navigate uneven terrain, hills, exposed roots, streams and potentially muddy sections, particularly during the rainy season. We’ll take breaks for rest, hydration and snacks while continuing to search for wildlife and learning about the extraordinary ecosystem around us.
This demanding hike usually takes between eight and nine hours and requires good physical condition and experience walking long distances. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at Sirena Ranger Station, where we’ll enjoy dinner and settle into the bunk-bed accommodation for a well-deserved night’s rest.
Day 2: Sirena Exploration
The second day begins around 5:00 am with an early morning walk, offering an opportunity to experience the rainforest as it awakens. During these “quieter” hours, wildlife is often more active, and the sounds of the forest create a completely different atmosphere. After approximately two hours of exploration, we’ll return to the ranger station for breakfast and a short rest.
After breakfast, once everyone is ready, we’ll head out for a second guided walk along the trails surrounding Sirena Ranger Station. We’ll continue searching for wildlife while learning about animal behavior, the rainforest and the ecological relationships that make this area so extraordinary. Possible sightings include monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, peccaries, coatis, crocodiles and, with some luck, a Baird’s tapir. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but every walk brings new possibilities.
Around midday, we’ll return to the station for lunch and some time to rest. In the afternoon, we’ll begin our third walk of the day, exploring until approximately 6:00 pm and experiencing the changing activity and atmosphere of the rainforest as the day comes to an end. We’ll then return to Sirena for dinner and our second night at the station, preparing for the challenging coastal hike to La Leona the following morning.
Day 3: Sirena - La Leona (20 km)
Our final day begins around 5:00 am, although the exact departure time will depend on weather conditions and the tides. After collecting a packed meal to enjoy along the way, we’ll say goodbye to Sirena and begin the approximately 20 km journey toward La Leona.
After two days surrounded by Sirena’s rainforest, the landscape gradually changes as the trail reaches the Pacific coastline. As the morning unfolds, we’ll alternate between forest trails and stretches of sandy beach, crossing streams and rivers while enjoying sunrise views and one final opportunity to encounter Corcovado’s wildlife. This dramatic transition from dense rainforest to open coastline makes the final stage feel completely different from the previous days.
Despite having little elevation gain, this remains a demanding hike due to the distance, heat, humidity and sections of soft sand. The journey usually takes between seven and eight hours, with breaks for rest, hydration and food along the way.
Upon reaching La Leona Ranger Station, we’ll continue to Carate, where transportation will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Jiménez. After crossing Corcovado from its remote interior to the Pacific coast, our three-day expedition comes to an end.

- At least 2 liters of water per person in reusable containers.
- Additional energy snacks and food for the day.
